About vaginal odor
There are several causes in women's health that cause vaginal discharge odor, all of which can be eliminated simply and painlessly. Most (95%+) vaginal odor is caused by an infection called "gardnerella" which causes bacterial vaginosis. While this infection can be passed between partners, it is not a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is one of the chief causes of vaginal odor. This odor may become more pronounced after having sex and is often referred to as fishy in nature. This is the most common type of vaginal odor.
Women who have a new sex partner or who have had multiple sex partners are more likely to develop BV. But women who have never had sexual intercourse can be affected as well. It is not clear what role sexual activity plays in the development of bacterial vaginosis and there are many unanswered questions about the role that harmful bacteria play in causing BV.
Women do not get bacterial vaginosis from toilet seats, bedding, swimming pools or from touching objects around them.

Scientific studies suggest that BV is common in women of reproductive age. In the United States, as many as 16% of pregnant women have bacterial vaginosis. This varies by race and ethnicity from 6% in Asians and 9% in whites to 16% in Hispanics and 23% in African Americans.
